After graduating from PHS, I stayed in
the Pampa area and worked for Motor Inn Auto Supply, construction work for
Celanese and did some oil field work. During this time my oldest son Clay
was born. A year later his brother Les arrived.
In 1962 I went to work for the Texas Department of Public Safety as a
Highway Patrolman. I was stationed in Dumas until October of 1969. I
applied for and was promoted to the Criminal Law Enforcement, Narcotics
Division on the same day my youngest son, John Wesley III, was born.
From 1969 to 1971 I was stationed in Houston and then the DFW area,
working deep undercover. My duties were to infiltrate various types of
high-level narcotic trafficking organizations. One of the more interesting
assignments included riding with the Banditos Motorcycle Club. I also
dealt with attorneys, doctors and various other people who participated in
the illicit narcotics trade.
In 1971 I was promoted to Lieutenant, Narcotics Division and transferred
back to Houston supervising a team of 8 to 10 agents. I moved back to
Dallas in 1974, and in 1975 I married my wife Shelia. She had a 7-year-old
daughter. During this time I went back to school at night and obtained my
Associate Degree.
In 1978 I was promoted to Captain and remained stationed in Dallas for the
next 15 years, commanding 33 counties and supervising 6 Sergeants and 35
Investigators. I initiated the first State, County and City Narcotics Task
Force within the state of Texas. I am a charter member of the Texas
Narcotics Officers Association and served as their president in 1978.
In 1993 I was promoted to Assistant Commander of Narcotics and transferred
to Austin. Then in 1995 I was promoted to Commander of Criminal Law
Enforcement Narcotics Division.
After thirty-four and a half years with the Department I decided to retire
in 1996. I qualify each year to keep my commission through DPS as a
Special Texas Ranger. I also do some part time work as a licensed private
investigator.
We have built a cabin in Twin Lakes, Colorado. We usually spend most of
the summer and a few weeks in the fall there.
In 2006 we were ready to leave the city and live the country life. We
bought land near Shamrock and started building our retirement home there.
We were going to travel and do all the things we had waited to do. The
same year our lives took a different turn, and we adopted our grandson
John Wesley and his sister Sierra. The adoption was final in 2007 and
after almost 20 years of empty nest we are raising children again. Wesley
is 12 and Sierra is 6. Needless to say life has changed for us, but it is
a good thing and we wouldn’t change it for the world.
I’ve always been a motorcycle rider and we have a Honda Gold Wing that we
love to ride. We like to bass fish and have fished many tournaments. The
whole family enjoys fishing and hunting. There is an abundance of wildlife
on the ranch.
Our oldest son, Clay, is in Leesburg, GA. Les is in Houston, TX.
John Wesley is in Nashville, TN. Our daughter, Kerri, is in Briscoe, TX.
Wesley and Sierra live with us on the ranch at Shamrock.
