OBITUARY

Gary Wilhelm

 

LOVINGTON, N.M. — Services for Gary Marshall Wilhelm, 62, of Lovington, N.M., will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Bethel Assembly of God in Lovington with Charles Farina, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in Prairie Haven Memorial Park under the direction of Griffin Funeral Home in Hobbs.

He died Monday, March 10, 2003, in Lubbock.

He was born May 4, 1940, in Wink. He married Betty Crum on May 18, 1977, in Hobbs. He lived in Hobbs before moving to Lovington. He attended high school in Pampa, where he was an athlete from 1956 until 1958. He served in the National Guard in the 1960s.

He was a Golden Glove boxing champion from 1950 until the 1960s. He is listed in the Smithsonian because of his achievements in boxing. He attended the University of Wisconsin. He was voted Father of the Year in 1980 by the state of New Mexico and was recognized as an outstanding citizen by Sen. Pete Domenici.

He was preceded in death by a son and a daughter.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Robert Miller of Hobbs and Charles Getta of Lovington; two daughters, Lela Morrison Hoffman of Alvin and Amy Steen of Roswell, N.M.; his father, Ollie Frances of Las Cruces, N.M.; two brothers, Bobby of Lubbock and Rocky of Katy; a sister, Linda Queen of Amarillo; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
